TMPRSS6 cleaves KCNE1 and causes arrhythmias in iron overload disease

Abstract Iron storage disease is associated with cardiovascular manifestations, including various forms of cardiac arrhythmias of unknown origin. In this study, cardiac arrhythmias associated with iron overload were investigated in human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CM) and hiPSC-derived sinus node-like pacemaker cells. Among other effects, iron overload leads to an increase in the plasma membrane-anchored protease TMPRSS6.

Abstract The TWIK-related spinal cord K+ channel (TRESK, K2P18.1) is a K2P channel contributing to the maintenance of membrane potentials in various cells. Recently, physiological TRESK function was identified as a key player in T-cell differentiation rendering the channel a new pharmacological target for treatment of autoimmune diseases. The channel activator cloxyquin represents a promising lead compound for the development of a new class of immunomodulators.

I watched Succession with a fever every Monday night. It was dinner with the Roy family, no excuses. It was the writing, the acting, the taking down of the rich. And when I think about it, it was just being in awe of how the central characters treated people. They were basically unrelenting nightmares towards each other and every person they met. To say these people didn’t care or understand how to act with empathy or how to get the best of everyone around would be the understatement of the century.
