Russia’s Hybrid War Has Entered a Dangerous New Phase
For the first few years of the war in Ukraine, Russia’s hybrid warfare attacks in Europe remained just below the threshold that might trigger a collective response. As the United States’ permanent representative to NATO from 2021 to 2024, I watched the campaign develop: undersea cables cut, incendiary devices hidden in cargo packages, and arson attacks on weapons factories and depots across Europe.
The wrong way to review US force posture in Europe
Insights & Reports Bloomberg recently reported that the Trump administration will consider European countries’ ideological positions and support for U.S. policies as part of the European posture review that is currently underway.

When the world's at stake, go beyond the headlines.
The foundations of the Atlantic alliance are shifting in ways not seen since the early days of the Cold War. Washington is no longer simply urging greater European burden-sharing: It is redefining the terms of the alliance itself. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that the era of a coherent, rules-based international system has passed.

The New Eurasian Order
On October 28, 2024, a group of South Korean intelligence officials briefed NATO members and the alliance’s three other Indo-Pacific partners—Australia, Japan, and New Zealand—on a shocking development in the war in Ukraine: North Korea’s deployment of thousands of its troops to Russia’s Kursk region to aid Moscow’s war effort. The fact that Seoul sent its top intelligence analysts to Brussels for the briefing was nearly as stunning as North Korea’s decision to enter the war in Ukraine.

Mast Cell Derived Histamine Negatively Regulates Hematopoiesis
Abstract Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are essential for generating all blood cell types and maintaining immune function and oxygen transport. This requires tight regulation of self-renewal, differentiation, and quiescence, driven by intrinsic and extrinsic signals. While the influence of many HSC progeny on HSC decisions are recognized, the role of mast cells (MCs) remain understudied.
Celebrating 75 Years of NATO
By Julianne Smith, US Ambassador to NATO Today marks a significant milestone: the 75th anniversary of NATO. When NATO was founded, president Truman envisioned it as a shield against aggression, and it has proven to be just that. This historic Alliance stands as a testament to our collective commitment to freedom, security, and prosperity. Alliances, whether at NATO or elsewhere, are not just symbols of solidarity – they are the bedrock of our security.

America’s Evolving Place in the World
In the run-up to the 2024 presidential election, the United States’ global influence continues to wane—amid deep political polarization at home and global geopolitical tensions that threaten Euro-Atlantic security. And yet, America can emerge stronger from the crises it faces. This will require forging a fairer and more inclusive society, investing in a modern, human-centered economy, and strengthening partnerships with friends and allies.
Debunking the Myth Behind Pinterest + Luxury
Many event professionals share a love-hate relationship with Pinterest. It provides the industry with loads of inspiration, but it often sets unrealistic expectations for couples. In particular, Pinterest has gotten a bad reputation for appealing to penny-pinching couples who want all of the overly designed aesthetics for none of the cost.
Cold Soaking Food
One thing I was absolutely not willing to do in the beginning was skip on a cook stove. Out in the cold forest, after a long day of hiking, a hot meal was the perfect reward. But pack weight is critical and something had to go. As some of you know, appetite is dead in the first days. The idea of eating made me ill, but I knew I needed to force feed myself. Starting hot and choking down two spoons full every half hour ends with a cold dinner. Honestly, it wasn’t half bad.
Georgia Rainforest
The section of trail leaving Stover Creek shelter has been my favorite so far. It was completely green over the trail and felt like a tropical rainforest. Just past this is as a cypress forest. For several miles the trail runs parallel to a sizable creek with several small waterfalls. Despite the fact that it was raining all day and the trail was mud sludge, it was still magical. Turning uphill to Hawk Mountain the trees were bare in the deciduous forest once again.
A Magical Day - The Trek
Puddle Cocktail My water filtration system comes with an optional straw attachment. On the packaging they show a picture of a person down on the ground drinking from a puddle. I joked about it saying, “Who would actually ever do this?“ I’ll tell you who…….a person who ran out of water the night before and still has 2 miles to go to the spring. The previous night’s rainstorm became a blessing as I got up and walked over to the morning’s untouched trail, full of fresh deep rain puddles.

Lifting Up Our Fellow Hikers
Camaraderie Online One of the first things I did after announcing my intention to thru hike the Appalachian Trail was to join several AT hiker groups on social media. This served multiple purposes, primarily to pump myself up by reading other people’s stories during a period of fear and self-doubt. But equally important was learning about what to do and what not to do regarding gear, supplies, food, and all the other things that I hadn’t even considered yet.
Greetings from Texas
This is just a quick introduction while I’m still in the planning stages of this awesome upcoming adventure. If you are reading this post then it’s a safe bet that we have this dream in common. Over the past two months, I’ve watched my fair share of other hikers’ blogs and vlogs. They have been a source of inspiration, especially when fear and self-doubt start to set in.
Evaluating Your Blogging Process and How to Prep for the Year Ahead
Blogs are a powerful tool in your company’s marketing arsenal to attract more clients, but they are often overlooked as dreadful tasks you’re forced to throw together out of obligation. You hear how valuable blog posts can be for SEO, so you might pepper them with some search terms that sound like a good fit or maybe you have no idea what you’re supposed to write.
Prep Your Pinterest Now to Work For You As Things Pick Up
Pinterest is well-known in the industry as the source of our clients’ endless inspiration. Yet, many event professionals don’t use the platform to its full potential as a marketing channel. For some, it can seem like an extra to-do on the list—and one that isn’t quite as simple as hopping on Instagram Stories and sharing a glimpse of one’s day.

Clean Up Your Pinterest Profile for Engagement Season
When you recognize that Pinterest is not an “alternative” to any social media site but rather a one-of-a-kind marketing entity, you can adjust your strategy to take advantage of the 40+ million people planning their wedding on Pinterest (The Knot, 2016). Opinion: NATO must adapt to new threats and challenges | DW | 24.12.2021
The Russia-Ukraine standoff, China's posturing and cybersecurity threats — these are testing times for NATO. US Ambassador to NATO, Julianne Smith, says no other alliance is better-suited to meet those challenges. Over the last few weeks, I've thought a lot about what lies ahead for the alliance in 2022. On the one hand, this is an exciting time to be in Brussels.
IL-18R-mediated HSC quiescence and MLKL-dependent cell death limit hematopoiesis during infection-induced shock
Highlights • Type I and II IFNs regulate expression of IL-18 and IL-18R in shock-like infection • IL-18 production contributes to HSC/HSPC loss during shock-like infection • IL-18R signaling in ST-HSCs promotes infection-induced quiescence • MLKL-deficient HSCs are protected during infection Summary Severe infection can dramatically alter blood production, but the mechanisms driving hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSC/HSPC) loss have not been clearly defined.
Use of GPS Devices in Family Matters: Spies, Lies, TROs and Crimes
Family law attorneys are all too familiar with the common refrain: “My spouse [or ex-spouse] is harassing/stalking me.” While most matrimonial attorneys know the elements of those crimes – N.J.S.A. 2C:33-4 (harassment) and N.J.S.A. 2C:12-10 (stalking) – and, of course, the differences between colloquial parlance and the statutes, things get stickier when our clients are themselves accused of harassment or stalking.

The Lowdown on Obama's New National Security Strategy
A little less than a year ago, my colleague Jacob Stokes and I wrote a piece for Politico Magazine highlighting some of the challenges facing those drafting the next National Security Strategy (NSS), which at the time was supposedly just weeks away from release. How would they address the rebalancing to Asia question? How to acknowledge counterterrorism victories, but also the fact that the terrorism threat has in many ways worsened?
Charting a Transatlantic Course to Address China
Executive Summary Mounting competition between China and liberal democracies will shape the course of the 21st century. The gravity and scope of the challenges that China poses have permeated the transatlantic policy agenda and become a focal point in U.S.-Europe relations. Whereas China has long been a source of disagreement and even tension between the transatlantic partners, in the past two years views have converged.
Crushin' It: Fall Grape Harvest in Virginia
Photo courtesy of Virginia Wine By Julianne Winkler Smith As the fog lifts over the rolling hills and the rising sun steadily illuminates row by row of grapevines, there’s a distinct peace in the thick Virginia air. But, like the calm before the storm, a time of frenzy is swelling just below the surface. The crush is coming. Any winemaker will tell you the same thing: From meticulously tending the vines to adhering the distinctively branded label, the entire process is a labor of love.

Farmhouse, Refined.
BRINGING A POPULAR STYLE INTO MODERN TRENDS Photos by 434 marketing A century ago, farming was a dominant industry and private endeavor in our country. And farmhouses, well, that’s where farm families and workers lived. Function over form dominated these homes in structure and design. Wood was cheap and easy to come by for construction and furnishings, and shiplap preceded the sheetrock walls of today. You could say that the “farmhouse style” of the day was simple, intentional, and purposeful.
In a Crisis, a Fumbling America Confirms Europe’s Worst Fears
Europeans have been watching America’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic with alarm. Last week’s news that the United States plans to freeze funding for the World Health Organization was seen as yet another piece of evidence that the United States is shedding its traditional, global leadership role.
NATURAL RELIEF FOR SEASONAL ALLERGIES
By Julianne Winkler Smith on March 1, 2020 Body THINKING OUTSIDE THE (MEDICATION) BOX This spring, just ask around (or simply pause to listen for the din of coughing, sniffling and sneezing), and you’ll discover that environmental allergies seem to be a common nemesis—especially in deciduous tree–dominated central Virginia. By taking a walk down any typical drugstore aisle, you can see just how prevalent the issue is by the number of “allergy relief” medications that stock the shelves.
Germany’s 5G Debate Ought Not Be a Referendum on Donald Trump
Editor’s Note: A version of this article was published in Munich’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung. Chancellor Angela Merkel can’t seem to make up her mind. For months, her administration, the Germany Parliament, and outside experts have been debating whether to rely on high-risk vendors for the construction of the country’s 5G telecommunications networks. Unfortunately, this important debate keeps getting sidetracked.
Europe needs a China strategy; Brussels needs to shape it
Europe’s momentum in developing a clear-eyed approach toward China has stalled. In March 2019, the European Commission issued a white paper naming China a systemic rival and economic competitor. That publication marked a fundamental shift in how far European institutions were willing to go in raising the challenges China poses to Europe’s openness and prosperity. It also reflected shifts that were occurring in capitals across Europe.
Europe Needs a China Strategy; Brussels Needs to Shape It
Editor’s Note: Europe's relationship with China is fraught with disagreements and inconsistencies. Different countries have different approaches, and they are not capitalizing on the collective power of the European Union—all to China’s benefit. Julianne Smith of the German Marshall Fund and Torrey Taussig of the Harvard Kennedy School detail the problems this is causing for Europe and lay out a set of steps that would put Europe in a stronger negotiating position.

What the Next President Can Do to Save Our Alliances with Europe
Here’s how to immediately repair the relationship. The White House/Flickr The transatlantic relationship has suffered a series of near-fatal blows in recent years. President Trump has openly questioned America’s Article 5 commitment to defend any attacked NATO member, dubbed the European Union a “foe,” and repeatedly disparaged some of America’s closest allies—for example, calling Germany “captive to Russia.” The people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union.

The Old World and the Middle Kingdom
Europe is beginning to face up to the challenges posed by a rising China. From the political debates roiling European capitals over the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei’s involvement in building 5G mobile networks to the tense EU-China summit earlier this year, recent events have shown that European leaders are growing uneasy in a relationship that until recently both sides saw as immensely beneficial.
Assange’s Indictment: A Threat to Everyone
The recent Justice Department indictment of Julian Assange for violating the Espionage Act has appropriately triggered widespread opposition from those who treasure a free press. This latest government overreach through the invocation of the World War I-era law is not the first of its kind in recent history: It began during the George W.
