Biography
Julia Stein is a journalist, poet, literary critic, and non-fiction writer. She has written for Counterpunch, Rain Taxi, Village Voice, L.A. Weekly, American Book Review as well as worked for Arts Express on WBAI radio New York. She co-authored the book "Shooting Women: Behind the Camera, Around the World" and also published five books of poetry: What Were They Like, Walker Woman, Shulamith, Desert Soldiers, and Under the Ladder to Heaven. She also edited two anthologies of poetry: Walking through a River of Fire: 100 Years of Triangle Fire Poetry and Every Day Is an Act of Resistance: Selected Poems of Carol Tarlen.
Recently she finished writing a memoir I Can Hear Them Singing, a three-generation memoir of her family’s village in Belarus, Russia, 1844-1942; her Jewish family’s immigration to Pittsburgh, and her life in college at UC Berkeley in 1960s.
