Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was a volunteer news reporter at WBAI-FM in New York.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Of course! Even a manual one.

How is social media changing news?

User generated content is huge. There is still a place for professional journalism--but "real time" has new meaning.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Drupal to create online slideshows and other visual storytelling tools. I use social media including Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr.

What's your favorite social network?

Tumblr.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I did a story on AIDs peer education in Nicaragua and one on women border crossers in Tijuana. Both were many years ago.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Go overseas. The experience is invaluable and you will get strings by being in the right place at the right time.
