Julie River was born in Neptune, New Jersey, but she grew up in the great state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. She graduated from Emerson College with a double major in Film and English, then returned to Emerson for a Master’s degree in Media Studies. She also got accepted to a PhD program in Media Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, but she left before beginning her dissertation to pursue interests outside of academia.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Not since I was a little kid, and even then I’m pretty sure it was some sort of electric typewriter.

How is social media changing news?

It has shifted the focus to getting clicks and views, which doesn’t always generate the best content.

Why did you become a journalist?

My parents always said that I had a great talent for writing and that it’s what I should really focus on.
