The cladding and buried oxide (BOX) were taken to be made of SiO while the waveguide cores were taken to be made of Si. It is important to note that the core is embedded entirely in the SiO cladding and BOX; there is no air in contact with the cladding at all (Fig. 1). This particular combination of materials was chosen for its simplicity and symmetry, a good starting point to understand zero-birefringence. The geometric parameters are defined in Fig. 1.
