Abstract The transformation from prey to predator is a striking adaptive innovation shared by all carnivorous plants, which capture and digest diverse animal prey for nutrients (nitrogen, N). Here, we report carnivory in the alpine flowering plant Saxifraga candelabrum (Saxifragaceae; Saxifragales). Field experiments and herbarium surveys reveal that this plant actively attracts and captures insect prey via glandular hairs.

INTRODUCTION The evolution of life on Earth is not only reflected through a temporal lens, answering such questions as when an organism originated, who its ancestors were, and how many descendants it produced, but also through a spatial lens including questions of where it originated, how it spread, and how the current distribution pattern was formed.

1 INTRODUCTION The genus Corydalis DC. in Lamarck & De Candolle (1805: 637), the largest genus of Papaveraceae, contains ca. 530 species (Chen et al., 2023) mainly distributed in the North Temperate zone with the highest diversity in China (Wu et al., 1999; Zhang et al., 2008). The name Corydalis has a very checkered history. Linnaeus (1737, 1753) treated all species of the subfamily Fumarioideae in a single genus Fumaria. His original 11 species are now distributed among nine different genera.
