1 Introduction Over 90% of plant species form symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungi, which are predominantly either arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi or ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi (Brundrett and Tedersoo 2018; Tedersoo et al. 2020). These types are distinguished by their strategies for nutrient exchange and their ecological roles with host plants (Genre et al. 2020).

INTRODUCTION Tropical forests store half of Earth's terrestrial carbon (Lewis et al., 2015), but ongoing deforestation and degradation is dramatically reducing their capacity to act as carbon sinks (Pan et al., 2011). Protecting tropical forests and preserving their ability to regenerate and sequester carbon is thus a pivotal part of tackling the climate change crisis.
