Mesophere Marathon 1.0 Debuts, Supports Stateful Containers
In a move to cement a position of prominence in the data center workload orchestration market, Mesosphere officially unveiled version 1.0 of its Marathon orchestration platform. The company also announced that it had gotten $75.5 million Series C funding round, led by none other than HPE and Microsoft.
The Role of Platform-as-a-Service in the Container Era
Containers and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) systems have long had a symbiotic relationship. Many PaaS offerings have long depended on Linux Containers. And, of course, Docker was created at dotCloud to help it run its own service, making the connection between PaaS and the emergent container ecosystem a direct one. Containers made PaaS possible, and PaaS put containers on the map, enabling much of today’s most popular technology.
Parity Check: AWS Still Looms Over Docker Swarm and Kubernetes
Both Kubernetes and Docker recently published data about what is being used for container orchestration and management. Not surprisingly, K8s leads one survey and Docker Swarm leads the other. Yet, there are two overall trends that can be taken away even if you disregard that part of the horse race: Docker Cloud, in which Swarm is a component, has positioned itself as a way to be cloud agnostic.
Mesos will Support Multiple Container Formats with the Unified Containerizer
Apache Mesos has been supporting Docker as an alternate to its own default container since late 2014. But now the popular open source cluster scheduler platform is nearing completion on a more simplified approach that intends to replace both of the two existing containers in the hopes of easing future development of frameworks. In addition to this goal, this new “unified containerizer” will allow newer container formats to be much more easily added into Mesos.
