Weber State takes on deceivingly difficult road trip to Sacramento, Portland
OGDEN — Weber State men’s basketball takes its seven-game win streak on the road this week for a pair of late-night contests against Portland State and Sacramento State. Both the Vikings (15-10, 5-7 Big Sky) and Hornets (6-19, 3-9) have long shots at earning a first-round bye in the Big Sky Tournament in March, but their conference records may not be an accurate representation of their talent.

OGDEN — In a neck-and-neck contest Thursday night, Weber State slammed the door late on Sacramento State with a 15-2 run to claim an 80-64 win at the Dee Events Center. “In the first half I felt like we didn’t play with a lot of team spirit,” WSU head coach Randy Rahe said. “We’ve got to be a team that competes with a great edge and a great competitive team spirit. SACRAMENTO -- Five Gauchos scored in double figures, led by Max Heidegger's game-high 23 points, as UC Santa Barbara defeated Sacramento State, 82-72, on Saturday evening at the Nest. Two big factors in the game were a 13-2 UCSB run to close the first half, and the Gauchos had nearly a 4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio (19 assists, five turnovers). UC Santa Barbara held a 17-7 advantage in points off turnovers, with four of those Hornet miscues resulting in easy fast break buckets for the Gauchos.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Despite shooting just 32 percent from the field (19-for-60) and 27 percent from the 3-point line (7-26), Sacramento State opened the 2017-18 season by hanging with a very good Colorado State team before eventually falling, 72-61, on Friday evening at Moby Arena. The Hornets, who held a 35-34 lead early in the second half, lost to a Rams squad that went 24-12 overall and a second-place finishing 13-5 in the Mountain West a year ago.
