Bacterial–fungal shifts and functional reprogramming in CDI: insights from matched metagenomic and metatranscriptomic profiling
Abstract Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a leading cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, yet most microbiome studies have focused on bacterial composition, overlooking fungal contributions and transcriptionally active functions.
Exploring the Development of Wild Microbiomes in the Eastern Fence Lizard
1 Background Microbiomes are intricate communities of microorganisms living within and around organisms and play crucial roles in various aspects of biology, including health, ecology and evolution. These bacterial communities interact with their host organisms in complex ways, influencing digestion, immunity and even behaviour. Furthermore, microbiomes impact ecosystem dynamics, nutrient cycling and disease susceptibility across diverse environments (McFall-Ngai et al.
Microhabitat Preferences, Climate Vulnerability and Conservation Status of the High‐Elevation Orange‐Speckled Forest Skink (Tumbunascincus luteilateralis)
1 Introduction Biodiversity loss is a pressing global issue, with an alarming number of species under threat from anthropogenic pressures (Barnosky et al. 2011; Ceballos et al. 2017). Taking inventory of the species most at risk of extinction is an important component of conservation planning.

Signatures of Alien Technology Could Be How Humanity First Finds Extraterrestrial Life
Skip to Content Get the latest federal technology news delivered to your inbox. email By Macy Huston and Justin Wright If an alien were to look at Earth, many human technologies – from cell towers to fluorescent light bulbs – could be a beacon signifying the presence of life. We are two astronomers who work on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence – or SETI. In our research, we try to characterize and detect signs of technology originating from beyond Earth. These are called technosignatures.
Gas vs. Electric Car Fires [2023 Findings]
Can't-Miss Facts Millions of gas, hybrid, and electric vehicles are recalled annually for fire risks Gas vehicles have the most manufacturer recalls for fire risk defects Electric vehicles catch fire less often, but electric car fires can be harder to put out than gas car fires With the recent electric vehicle fires featured in the news, such as the Tesla car fires, many electric car owners are worried about their cars spontaneously bursting into flames.

Digital biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease: the mobile/wearable devices opportunity
Abstract Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) represents a major and rapidly growing burden to the healthcare ecosystem. A growing body of evidence indicates that cognitive, behavioral, sensory, and motor changes may precede clinical manifestations of AD by several years. Existing tests designed to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases, while well-validated, are often less effective in detecting deviations from normal cognitive decline trajectory in the earliest stages of the disease.
Uncertainty about G.I. Bill compensation leaves paying for living expenses, tuition in the air for student veterans
Many veteran students have reasons to worry about paying for school this semester as thousands of G.I. Bill recipients have been waiting for the Veterans Affairs Office to process and pay for both their tuition and housing allowances. For many veterans these payments are how they pay for their living expenses while in school full time. The payments for many students have either been delayed or not received at all during the semester.
From football to Nashville: Nick Walsh is ready to leave his mark
For many, country music and football go hand-in-hand. But for one former Kansas State player, this connection goes even deeper. Nick Walsh, former punter for the Wildcats, is beginning to make his mark in the country music world. Walsh, who received his degree in finance from K-State in December 2017, has shifted his focus onto his new career full time. “Music’s always been a passion of mine, it just scary because the singer-songwriter life is really different,” said Walsh.

Lecturer shares how life experiences shape her art style
The Mark A. Chapman Gallery hosted real-to-life surrealism artwork on Monday in conjunction with a lecture by Melanie Johnson titled “Close.” Johnson spoke on how experiencing different art forms helped shaped her style and form within her future works. “I wanted to touch on those things that I am thinking about and patterns I find in my work,” Johnson said. Drawing inspiration from other artists as an undergrad helped her think about creating narrative within her work, Johnson said.
Was U.S. Nationals at Meet Dominated by Favorites or Underdogs?
During the early part of last weekend’s U.S. National Championships, it seemed like many of the pre meet favorites were all hype. Justin Wright and Zach Harting went 1-2 in the men’s 200 fly ahead of Jack Conger. Blake Pieroni won the men’s 100 free, not all-everything star Caeleb Dressel. Andrew Seliskar won the men’s 200 free over favored Townley Haas. On the other hand, there were plenty of events where the top seeds dominated.
Antibiotic Treatments for Clostridium difficile Infection Are Associated with Distinct Bacterial and Fungal Community Structures
ABSTRACTClostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the most common nosocomial infection in the United States, being associated with high recurrence and persistence rates. Though the relationship between intestinal dysbiosis and CDI is well known, it is unclear whether different forms of dysbiosis may potentially affect the course of CDI. How this is further influenced by C. difficile-directed antibiotics is virtually uninvestigated.
HFE Genotype Restricts the Response to Paraquat in a Mouse Model of Neurotoxicity
Parkinson's disease (PD) is marked clinically by motor dysfunction and pathologically by dopaminergic cell loss in the substantia nigra (SN) and iron accumulation in the substantia nigra. The driver underlying iron accumulation is unknown and could be genetic or environmental. The HFE protein is critical for the regulation of cellular iron uptake. Mutations within this protein are associated with increased iron accumulation including in the brain.

OPINION: Can the net remain truly neutral?
Net neutrality, a term that is seeing greater use in recent times; but do people really understand what it means? Net neutrality is the concept that all information on the internet is to be treated equally. While this concept of internet freedom is not new, recent years have seen rise to laws that help protect that freedom. Now these freedoms are coming under attack and we may see rise to a more controlled web browsing experience. In Feb.
