Reimagine Agile: Back to Basics, Forward to the Future
In 2001, the “lightweight” methodology community was the size of a marble, while today, it is expansive. In 2001, the internet was just unfolding; today, AI is ascendant. In 2001, the Agile Manifesto had software development in mind. Today, Agility applies at all enterprise levels. The ability to adapt to constant change and uncertainty, be it with software development or business activities, may be the single greatest competitive advantage in the 21st century.
The State of Sustainability in Agile – Reflections on SoSA 2023 | Agile Alliance
The Agile Sustainability Initiative set up this event to dive into all aspects of sustainability – social (focusing, e.g., on diversity, inclusion, or accessibility), environmental (concentrating, i.e., on the carbon footprint of the systems we’re creating), and economic (ensuring to improve the life of everyone everywhere). With more than 180 sign-ups, the interest was quite high.
What’s the value proposition of coaches?
This entry was written as part of the Supporting Agile Adoption program, an Agile Alliance initiative dedicated to supporting organizations and their people to become more Agile. We have seen Agile transformation disrupted because the value that coaches provide is not transparent. Coaches seldom make clear how their work benefits the organization. Sometimes coaches miss the “right” vocabulary, or for a leader, the value of a coach is not evident.

How Agile Can Make a Difference for Climate Action and Sustainability
More and more people think about sustainability and their personal responsibility. For example, people talk about individual efforts which often include using less plastic, eating less meat, or reducing the carbon footprint we create by air travel. Beyond this personal focus, we are connecting agile practice and mindset to sustainability in our work. This includes a focus on sustainability in agile product development.

Stretch Your Leadership Muscles: Leading Up, Down, and Across!
This entry was written as part of the Supporting Agile Adoption program, an Agile Alliance initiative dedicated to supporting organizations and their people become more Agile. We have seen Agile transformations being disrupted by leaders practicing one style of leadership independent of the situation, the people involved, or challenges faced. In our previous article on ‘Support for purpose: Situational awareness for change leaders’.
Overcoming One-Size-Fits-All Budgeting
Overcoming One-Size-Fits-All Budgeting: Fitting Your Budgeting Approach to the Agility of Your Business This entry was written as part of the Supporting Agile Adoption program, an Agile Alliance initiative dedicated to supporting organizations and their people become more Agile. Agile transformations can easily be disrupted by a traditional non-Agile budgeting approach that contradicts the flexibility, adaptability, responsiveness, and nimbleness required by Agility.
Support for Purpose: Situational Awareness for Change Leaders
This entry was written as part of the Supporting Agile Adoption program, an Agile Alliance initiative dedicated to supporting organizations and their people become more Agile. We have seen Agile transformations being disrupted by lack of awareness that the transformation is a journey that needs different support in each particular context and situation. Change Management is an Art Change “management” (if that exists) is an art.
Escaping the Death Spiral of Your Agile Transformation
This entry was written as part of the Supporting Agile Adoption program, an Agile Alliance initiative dedicated to supporting organizations and their people become more Agile. Almost all of us have seen Agile transformations being disrupted by external factors. For example, a new strategy, new CEO, a market disruption, or a pandemic can bring a halt to or – if you are lucky – accelerate your transformation.
Improve Your Agile Retrospectives by Learning From Science!
How well are Agile retrospectives serving you? We assume you follow the Agile retrospective agenda by starting with setting the stage, then gathering data, followed by generating insights before you decide on actions and close the retrospectives. We furthermore hope that at your next retrospective you look back to your earlier decisions in order to evaluate if you managed to implement these actions and if they made any difference.

Leveraging the Agile Manifesto for More Sustainability
Key Takeaways Sustainability means taking a holistic perspective on social, environmental, and economic issues. The Agile Manifesto can be leveraged for increasing sustainability. For example, when focusing on business people and developers working together, explore the target group and ensure that you embrace accessibility. Addressing sustainability is becoming a key success factor for companies to find and keep both talent and clients.
Complexity in Change Management Processes
In this work, we present the concept of a change model. The model addresses complex changes as we often experience it when introducing a modern (respectively Agile) software development process. The model enables change leaders to better understand the context of the change by looking at the change’s purpose, conditions and the possible change options. The model is still experimental, yet it has been tried with two different groups.
Game Changer - DevOps & Agile - Agile Singapore 2016
I've been a gamer for over two decades now. I've been in business and IT universe for more than 16 years. And I'm always amazed at how similar and yes so far apart both worlds are when it comes to product development. In 2007, I came across one of the most unique gaming experiences called EVE Online. It's known as a Single Shard Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) game set in space.
Connect Agile Teams to Organizational Hierarchy: A Sociocratic Solution
Many agile teams suffer from the mismatch of agile and organizational leadership with the latter being reflected by the organizational hierarchy. Based on self-organization and iterative processes the teams run into trouble with the top-down steering of their environment. Consequently, very often agile proponents believe that a supportive agile organization should be structured without hierarchies.

Using Agile Retrospectives for Organizational Change
The book Retrospectives for Organizational Change: An Agile Approach by Jutta Eckstein explores how agile retrospectives can be applied to initiate and implement organizational change. It describes the concepts for using retrospectives to develop a shared future and shares experiences of applying retrospectives to support change in organizations. A sample chapter from the book can be downloaded: Challenges in Organizational Change.
Planning and Controlling Complex Projects
I have been working on large and complex agile projects for more than 10 years. Typically planning and budgeting are based on trying to predict how development will turn out. Very often the stories are estimated by the development team, but the budget for the whole project is independent from those estimates. Especially for complex projects this leads most often to (unwanted) surprises.
