In the days following the killing of Charlie Kirk, I had the unenviable task of explaining to my well-meaning, sixty-year-old parents just who Nick Fuentes is and why his followers are called groypers. Initially, the shooter was believed to be an acolyte of Fuentes, who had created a parallel youth movement to Kirk’s more mainstream Turning Point USA. Their rivalry had long been a supporting storyline of the far right’s passion play, and the New York Times’s readership had catching up to do.
