1 INTRODUCTION Tolerance to high-intensity running is characterized by a hyperbolic velocity–duration relationship (Hill, 1925; Poole et al., 2016). The relationship is defined by two parameters—the curvature constant, termed D′, and an asymptote, critical velocity (CV). CV (or power when appropriate) demarcates sustainable and predictably unsustainable exercise. Velocities above CV demand nonsteady state metabolism in which the rate of O2 consumption (V̇O2) is drawn to the maximum.
