Scarier Than a Haunted House

I was exhausted and waiting for friends at the Minnesota State Fair. I sat down on a bench near the haunted house, but I knew there was no way I was going to go in there. Instead I took out my sketchbook and started drawing the stream of humanity walking by. A hip woman sitting next to me complimented my sketches. I said almost apologetically, “Thanks. Drawing calms me down during all the overwhelm of the Fair.” She smiled politely and I went back to drawing.

5 Essential Tips for Better Lettering in Comics

I’m re-sharing this article in the lead up to the lettering workshop I’m co-hosting on September 12 with fellow designer and cartoonist, Susannah Hainley. I’ve also included some new content below—like the wild thing a 5-year old girl said to our dog at the park. Good lettering can make or break a comic. The right font, size, and placement enhances readability and storytelling, while poor lettering can pull readers out of the experience.
