Together, these leaders afforded Indianapolis communities and educators an opportunity never before available to them – the chance to design and launch a community-led school, a charter school.

I’ll never forget a foundational principle I learned nearly two decades ago, while authorizing in Indianapolis: It should be hard to gain approval to start a new charter school. But it needs to be the right kind of hard. Over time, that principle has been diminished, if not altogether lost, in some places. Today, the application process for opening a new school has become something it was never meant to be: bureaucratic, rigid, and overwhelming.
