What was your first job as a journalist?

I won an internship at the local newspaper as part of a journalism award. Then I moved to Australia and began working in trade publications.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I was a founding editor and creator of Sassy magazine and we produced the first issue using typewriters.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via email.

Why did you become a journalist?

It took too many years of school to become a vet.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes. I was an editor.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Think twice...

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Anything not related to my fairly narrow specialty which is travel in the Americas.

Exploring the Americas on my ongoing Trans-Americas Journey working road trip.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That I'm on vacation.
