Karen is a young investigative journalist currently working on the Houston Chronicle's major projects team. She graduated from Medill School of Journalism in June 2014, where she was a part of the student watchdog team which partnered with major media outlets on public accountability investigations. In one of the investigations, Karen made a critical discovery looking through public records that linked campaign contributions to no-bid contracts in the village of Rosemont. The story was later nominated for a public interest journalism award in Chicago. She has interned for major newspapers including the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and Ottawa Citizen. A native Ottawan, she is bilingual in French and speaks Mandarin, and has also spent months reporting for news outlets in Beijing, China and Johannesburg, South Africa. She is a big believer in the power of journalism to speak up for the voiceless and scrutinize the system. And more than anything else, she loves writing and knows how to use video, audio and interactive graphics to enhance the power of story-telling.
