Tears flow freely these days as a mother and daughter adjust to their new normal. "It’s hard. It’s hard," Leah-Jean Fournier said. Her mother, LuAnn Baker, was diagnosed with early onset dementia. She’s just 65 years old. Baker moved from North Carolina to Nashua to live with Fournier, her only child. The 39–year-old is now her mother’s primary caregiver. Baker was once a vibrant business owner, traveler and paddle boarder. She is now suffering from frontotemporal dementia.

Brianna Corey's dog, Karma, is playful and protective, but the German shepherd can't save her owner from unwanted stares. "I just wanted to be able to go out and just be normal and have people not look at me weird," Corey said. A scar runs the length of Corey's torso—the consequence of an accidental shooting. "The bullet had gone through my colon and my hip. I have the bullet still lodged in my backside, so I'm not able to lay on my side and doing certain things, I get pain," Corey said.

Doug McIntosh has one person on speed dial. "Occasionally, I do have to call mom, like 20 times a day," McIntosh said. Morning, noon and night, sometimes McIntosh just longs for company. Most times, he's in need. "He would just call and say, 'Mom, my toilet's overflowing.' OK. I'm going to be right there. I'd jump in the car and get there. And there's, you know, things like he can't pick up a cellphone on the floor. Um, he's spilled a gallon of milk under the refrigerator.
