This is all to say "The Hobbit" and our all-female discussion group was v important to me as a young reader. I hope kids still read it.

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing for Northwestern University's daily paper, The Daily Northwestern. I was an arts and culture reporter and later a Web editor.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. As a child, my parents let me play around with an old model with numerous sticky and missing keys. I loved the sounds it made.

How is social media changing news?

News breaks faster, but this necessitates journalists to fact check, report and contextualize the information for their readers.
