Concerns raised over changes to legal aid fees

Lawyers and civil liberty groups are urging Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan to reconsider plans to introduce a new fee structure for criminal legal aid cases in district courts. Most defendant solicitors are paid each time they appear for a client in a district court but, from 1 July, the Department of Justice is replacing this system with a flat-fee model. The department claims this will improve efficiency and speed up case resolution.

People catastrophically injured through negligence seek annual payment of damages

People who have suffered catastrophic injuries due to negligence are calling on the Government to urgently enact legislation to provide for the annual payment of damages, known as Periodic Payment Orders, or PPOs. Among them is the family of Luke Miggin, who lives in Dublin. The 20-year-old suffered brain damage during his birth as a result of negligence and will require 24-hour care for the rest of his life. He communicates using eye gaze technology.

Parents, pupils protest at Dublin school

Hundreds of pupils and parents gathered at Johnstown Boys National School in south Dublin today, chanting "save our SNAs" to voice their concerns over cuts to SNA posts at the school from September. The school has nearly 400 pupils, 55 of whom have additional care needs and who are currently supported by nine SNAs. But from September that allocation will be going down to just 3.8 SNAs. Among those protesting at the loss of support was Paula Byrne.
