I am an award-winning journalist, editor and academic researcher. I hold a PhD in Gender and Cultural Studies, and am passionate about gender equity and social justice, particularly in sport.

In 2019 I won the VicHealth award for Outstanding Reporting of Women's Sport, an award I was Highly Commended for in 2018. While netball may be Australian girls' and women's top participation team sport, it has long fallen short of producing — or at least nurturing — elite Indigenous talent. Just three Indigenous Australian women have represented the Diamonds: Marcia Ella-Duncan, Sharon Finnan-White and, after a 22-year gap, Donnell Wallam. In 2024, Wallam left Australia for New Zealand, taking a swipe at her former club, the Firebirds, on the way out.

Two enormously well-resourced teams; two diametrically opposed strategies for managing one of the world's most arduous sporting road trips. On Friday, the Los Angeles Rams will 'host' the San Francisco 49ers in the first NFL regular-season match played in Australia, at the local time of 10:35am in Melbourne. That is 5:35pm on Thursday in Los Angeles, roughly equivalent to when a prime-time NFL fixture would kick off on the west coast of America.

If you look at women's sport, there's a lot of people asking mainstream media to change and do better. That's a good thing
