NATURE NOTES: Lost Seals of the Gulf

Did you know that there were once seals in Texas? The Caribbean Monk Seal (Monachus tropicalis) was last officially sighted in 1952 and declared extinct by the U.S. in 2008. The first written accounts of the seal came from Columbus’ expedition in 1494, during which eight were killed. In Texas, there were sightings in 1926 and 1932, and there are archaeological records of its existence here as well. It likely did not breed in Texas, and simply foraged and rested along the state’s southern coast.

I was made redundant at the start of June from the company that I had worked at for 15 years. As part of this I had a settlement package, which included my full £30,000 tax-free redundancy pay allowance, plus some more taxed money on top of that. I have decided to set up as a digital marketing consultant and have secured a couple of days work a week with a rival to my former employer. I have also been discussing doing two or three days a week consulting for my previous employer.
