1 INTRODUCTION Sound is detected in the mammalian inner ear by two types of auditory hair cells which are precisely arranged along the length of the organ of Corti. A single row of inner hair cells (IHCs) is located medial to three rows of outer hair cells (OHCs; Figure 1a). Each hair cell has a well-organized V-shaped bundle of actin-based protrusions called stereocilia. The bundles are oriented such that their vertices point toward the lateral edge of the tissue.
