Predictors of rural medical practice in Aotearoa New Zealand: a national outcomes prospective cohort study

Methods New Zealand currently has two medical schools: the University of Otago and the University of Auckland. During the period of this study, they produced a combined national total of 400–500 medical graduates per year. There are 3 entry pathways into medical schools in New Zealand. Approximately three-quarters of the cohort enter via the ‘undergraduate’ or general entry pathway. These are secondary school leavers who complete a highly competitive 1 year health science programme.
