I made my first piece of "multimedia" with an 8-track player, a cassette tape, a vinyl record and a bunch of still pictures cut out of teen magazines. It was 1986 and I knew then I wanted to tell stories for a living. Fast forward through 27 years of being a journalism student, a photojournalist, a newbie picture editor and now as the Director of Photography and Video at the Detroit Free Press, I've told stories that delighted, angered and motivated people - all without an 8-track player.

What was your first job as a journalist?

I don't think being a gossip in middle school counts so I would have to say staff photographer at Michigan State University's student newspaper, The State News.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes and I even own a manual one.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I'm not sure I have one. My inclination would be to pick a photographer since that is what I most identify with, but most fictional photographers are awful caricatures of the real thing. Although, I always liked Peter Parker’s spunk.
