Each September 11 brings us back to that clear Tuesday morning in 2001 when our nation was shaken and life as we knew it changed forever. For those of us who lived through the attacks, the images and emotions remain etched in memory. But for an entire generation of Northwest Indiana students, 9/11 is history, something they learn about in classrooms rather than recall from lived experience. Across the Region, schools, firehouses and civic groups continue to hold ceremonies and moments of silence.

When most of us think of work in the Region, our go-to image is that of steel mills. For generations, those towering furnaces symbolized steady jobs, a good paycheck and the heartbeat of our communities. Entire families built their lives around the shifts and union halls that defined an era of labor. While steel still matters, our economy is increasingly driven by education, health care, logistics and service industries. Amazon warehouses hum with activity.
