A mature tree in Tavistock is set to be removed as it’s a ‘potential safety hazard’ – and a tree works application has been submitted by a resident. A proposal application to remove a cherry tree on Alder Road was submitted to West Devon Council on September 14, detailing works to a tree preservation order (TPO) tree. The proposal states: “Remove tree due to showing signs of deterioration and decay is setting in on many branches and some dead wood is present.

Many local people are fascinated by the potential of healing plants and it’s good to know what native herbs and flowers are growing nearby, along with their historical healing properties. A recent guided walk in The Meadows in Tavistock, led by a medical herbalist, revealed the power of several plants growing in the wild. Nine participants joined the walk, keen to discover what plants were growing on the grassy areas and beside the river, along with what “healing properties” they possess.

Okehampton Show bluetongue response — cattle, sheep, dairy and pygmy goat classes cancelled

Okehampton Show has made a decision not to proceed with some livestock classes as bluetongue cases rise in Devon. Selina Barrow, show manager, confirmed that cattle, sheep, dairy goat and pygmy goat classes will not go ahead at the show on Thursday, August 13. Classes for pigs, poultry and horses are unaffected – and Selina urged the public to come along and show support. The update follows a detailed discussion by the Okehampton Show organisers with their veterinary team.
