At a holiday party for my graduate students and alumni, I noticed an unusual number of them traipsing out to the stoop to smoke cigarettes. I give these parties every year, and there are always a handful of smokers, bundled up in their coats, huddling against the wind. But this year there was a horde. These are aspiring writers with Albert Camus and George Orwell and Janet Malcolm on their bookshelves.
