Should all smartphones come with radio built-in? – Which? Conversation
Radio’s been around since the 19th century. It’s a relatively simple technology and yet FM tuners aren’t built into all smartphones. Yes, there are radio apps, but with data caps, should all phones have built-in radio? One of the joys of a smartphone is that you get lots of functions in one device, but the lack of a built-in FM tuner on many high profile smartphones has been something of a recent revelation to me. I’d taken radio as a given. I listen to quite a lot of radio.
Printer pile-up: are printers the most disposable gadget? – Which? Conversation
Facebook Twitter Reddit Email When the gremlins set in on your printer it seems easier to just ditch the thing and start again with a new one. But should manufacturers make it easier to fix printers, rather than playing up to this disposable culture? According to responses to our computing reliability survey, more than a third of people don’t bother to get their printer fixed when it develops a problem. That makes printers the most instinctively chuckable computing product in our survey.
Let’s not be forced into a DAB radio switchover – Which? Conversation
FM doesn’t have room for new radio stations and transmitting on both DAB and FM costs broadcasters more. Fine, but this isn’t reason enough for us to fork out hundreds of pounds to replace all our FM sets. As a nation we’re being ushered towards a digital radio future – one without national FM stations. The government’s Digital Radio Action Plan includes criteria to ensure that a switchover isn’t announced until there’s improved coverage and a certain percentage of us have tuned into DAB.

Cheap printer ink - is it worth the gamble?
You know the cheap ink that isn’t the same brand as your printer? That’s third party ink. Although we’ve heard experiences of them producing sub-standard prints or not working in certain printers, some of you are still willing to try another brand to reduce printing costs. And while three-quarters of the people who contacted us were reasonably happy with their alternative inks, there are still questions over the compatibility, quality and cost of these inks.
Do you get cheaper prints with third-party ink?
Printer ink can be expensive – more so than petrol, vintage port or Dom Perignon, measure for measure – but the price of a set of cartridges doesn’t tell you a thing about the cost of printing. And even when it comes to buying cheap ink cartridges from a different brand than your printer, prints don’t always work out cheap. The cost of printer ink is a common cause for complaint. Almost half of Which?
Are manufacturers cheating you out of printer ink?
If you think your printer cartridges run out far too early, you may have a point. A recent class action in the US involving claims against HP has now been settled. To cut a long story short, I’ll summarise it as ‘consumers being diddled out of getting the most from the ink they’ve paid for’. Printer manufacturers have got some of us right where they want us – third party inks aren’t an option for every printer, so we often don’t have a choice about what to buy.
which printers use less printer ink?
If you’ve been following our printer tests over the past few years, you’ll know that many printers don’t just seem to waste ink, they do waste ink. Inkjet printers have to clean their ink nozzles to keep printing at their best. This uses ink. Our testing has shown that some printers clean themselves much more frequently than others, which could mean that only a third of the ink in the cartridge ends up on your prints.
Should you pay a monthly fee to print?
Printer ink is expensive stuff – it’s not uncommon to pay upwards of 50 for a set of printer-branded inks. So if someone offered you 50 prints on your home printer for 1.99 a month, would you go for it? That’s the proposition of HP’s Instant Ink service which works with a number of wi-fi printers in HP’s range. With the Instant Ink service you sign up online and are debited an amount each month for a specified number of prints, depending on the plan you choose.
Should you buy cheap third-party printer ink?
Would you believe it? Third-party cartridge suppliers topped our first ever ink and toner satisfaction survey. So maybe it’s time you left those expensive Epson, costly Canon and highly-priced HP inks behind? The cost of ink is important when buying a printer. The cheapest printer in a store can easily cost less than a set of branded printer cartridges, meaning you’ll quickly spend more on prints than the printer itself.
Has your printer stopped accepting third-party ink cartridges?
Third-party ink cartridges are generally a fraction of the price of printer-branded inks, but we’ve heard reports of printer updates rendering these cartridges unusable. We asked Which? members to share their printing problems and a number of them sounded like they related to software updates. However, with some printers set to automatically update, it can be hard to pin a specific problem to a specific update.
Is your printer wasting your pricey printer ink?
The cost of printer ink has many of you riled, but the outright cost of the cartridges is just the start. Over the last year we’ve been running a number of tests on printers to look more closely at ink use. We’ve tested to see how much ink is wasted by head-cleaning cycles when you only print occasionally, and if this problem gets worse when you leave the printer off or in standby.
Why is printer ink more expensive than vintage champagne?
Printer ink is expensive – so much so that measure for measure it costs more than vintage champagne. Ten years may have passed since Which? first published this stat, but little has changed with regard to the cost of printer ink – it’s still eye-wateringly pricey. It’d be cheaper to swap your magenta ink for vintage port – although admittedly your prints might not look as good – because when is comes to pricey liquids, ink is among the most expensive.
