Rockhampton Zoo attempted reunion between baby chimp and mother ends in aggression

Keepers at a central Queensland zoo are continuing to hand-rear a baby chimpanzee after its mother showed aggression during an attempted reunion of the pair. Chimp Sile gave birth to Cassie at the Rockhampton Zoo in June, then dropped her, breaking the baby chimp's leg. Cassie then had to be hand-reared by keepers, until she was fully healed. Rockhampton Zoo curator Blair Chapman nursing baby Cassie, who is receiving 24/7 care by keepers.

Gusty winds and short storms for South-East Queensland ahead of Ekka public holiday

The state's south-east corner is in for strong winds and a possible "short burst" of rain this afternoon, as several regions enjoy their Royal Queensland Show public holiday. Harry Clark, senior meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology, said the "dynamic" day of weather was due to a vigorous trough moving across south-east and central Queensland. "That means fairly cloudy … and it'll be one line of showers and thunderstorms that comes through," he said.

Woorabinda alcohol and drug rehabilitation centre closes after council terminates lease

The only alcohol and drug rehabilitation centre in the remote Indigenous community of Woorabinda has closed after 14 years in operation. Mimosa Creek Healing Centre, which opened in 2012 in the community south-west of Rockhampton, was run by not-for-profit organisation Central Queensland Indigenous Development (CQID). It offered residential rehabilitation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men recovering from drug and alcohol abuse, among other community services.
