Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

General assignment reporter for a smalltown daily newspaper in New Hampshire.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

Social media has allowed everyone to function as a journalist, giving a wider and less filtered perspective of what's happening in the world.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Stephen Colbert

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Having a front row seat to history and offering a perspective to the day's events others probably don't have because they weren't there.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Most recently, #WeSawYourBoobs regarding Anne Hathaway's nipples at the 2013 Oscars.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Politely and don't overwrite it. Overwriting means you probably can't write well.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter. Hands down.

Who do you wish followed you?

Dan Saltzstein of The New York Times travel section and anyone from the New Yorker. Maybe Susan Orlean or David Sedaris?

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to write and travel.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

We didn't have a high school newspaper, but I worked as a columnist for my college newspaper.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Currently writing about fancy swimming pools at posh hotels for a large daily newspaper. It's a dream assignment.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't go into an interview assuming you already know the answers. Allow the conversation to evolve. Makes for better quotes.
