Abstract To date, research on teamwork in sport has focused primarily on conceptualizing and measuring the multidimensional construct and testing its impact on salient consequences. Less attention has been devoted to examining how teamwork behaviors can be improved, although teamwork training has been identified as one potential antecedent.

Although the concept of teamwork has historically not received the same level of research attention in sporting contexts as it has in other team settings (e.g., health care, military, and business; Carron et al., 2012; McEwan & Beauchamp, 2014), more evidence has begun to accumulate within sport over the past decade.

Silence and suspicion All participants reported that as the stakes and level of play intensified at the professional level, the silence and suspicion around help-seeking also increased. During the transition from pre-professional to professional ice hockey, many participants reported the importance of learning and adapting to the professional ice hockey culture. In some cases, teams or organisations made attempts to normalise help-seeking.
