Written on the Dark: Feels like Kay’s most elegiac work
Written on the Dark by Guy Gavriel Kay In Written on the Dark (2025), Guy Gavriel Kay returns to his “quarter-turn from our own” world, here shifting time and place to a late-medieval “France” (Ferrieres in Kay’s universe) ruled by a “mad king.” When the king’s brother is killed by the powerful Duke of Barratin and left on the streets of Orane (think Paris), tavern poet Thierry Villar finds himself embroiled in the politics and intrigue of a world he’d never imagined himself part of, as...
You Only Live Twice: Domo Origato!
You Only Live Twice by Ian Fleming Written during the winter of 1963, at Ian Fleming’s Goldeneye retreat in Oracabessa, on the north shore of Jamaica, You Only Live Twice was the author’s 12th James Bond novel, not counting the short story collection For Your Eyes Only (1960). Ultimately released in March ’64, just five months before the author’s untimely demise, it was the last Bond novel to be completed.

Starting her journey in 2007 at Blue Ridge Community College, Mintz’s story is a testament to how life’s twists and turns can lead to fulfilling careers with the right support and persistence. Mintz began her studies in computer science, but soon realized it was not for her. She switched to early childhood education in 2013, but it still did not seem right.

Jirel of Joiry: A truly marvelous fantasy collection from C.L. Moore
Jirel of Joiry by C.L. Moore Just recently, I had some words to say regarding the stories that Golden Age sci-fi/fantasy author C.L. Moore placed in Weird Tales magazine, during the 1930s, that dealt with the futuristic smuggler/spaceman Northwest Smith. But as most fans of Catherine Lucille Moore will readily tell you, Smith was not the only character from this beloved writer who made semiregular appearances in the legendary pulp that decade.
The Sword-Edged Blonde: Bledsoe is a natural storyteller
The Sword-Edged Blonde by Alex Bledsoe A foaming tankard for public libraries. If mine hadn’t featured Alex Bledsoe‘s engrossing debut novel, The Sword-Edged Blonde, I doubt I’d have ever discovered it. Granted, I only discovered it because of the quasi-garish cover and title (neither of which has much to do with the actual story), picking it up just to shake my head at one more piece of fantasy trash.

Photo Gallery: Allen Stone / Nick Waterhouse at Knuckleheads Saloon
Allen Stone. Photo by Rob Rhodes. Allen Stone is big. Big blonde hair. Big glasses. Big presence. His soulful falsetto thrilled the sold out crowd in the Knuckleheads garage on Wednesday night. He’s obviously having the time of his life, riding a wave of popularity after appearing as a guest mentor and collaborator on the most recent season of American Idol. Many in the crowd knew the lyrics and sang along to his sometimes introspective, most times joyous tunes.

Steve Howe of Yes. Photo by Rob Rhodes. Rock & Roll Hall Of Famers Yes took the stage at the Midland on Sunday night. The band just kicked off its 50th Anniversary Tour, and while the lineup has changed over the years, guitarist Steve Howe is still wowing crowds at age 71. Yes's set included 1970's "Sweet Dreams" and songs spanning decades to 2011's "Fly From Here." The kings of progressive rock are showing they still have the drive and the loyal fan base to keep going for years to come.
Recognize our students who are unsung heroes
Everyone has a story, many of which are not heard. One of the rewards from working with others is to witness these stories; it is indeed a privilege to participate in them.
