Long-term nitrous acid evolution modulates ozone and secondary aerosol variations in global megacities
Abstract Nitrous acid (HONO) is a crucial urban source of HOx radicals, promoting surface ozone (O3) and secondary fine particle (PM2.5) formation, yet its long-term evolution and air-quality impacts remain poorly constrained. Here, using a deep neural network established on worldwide field campaigns, we reconstruct global surface HONO distributions.
Global warming makes nitrogen oxide abatement key to ozone pollution mitigation
Abstract INTRODUCTION RESULTS DISCUSSION MATERIALS AND METHODS Acknowledgments Supplementary Materials REFERENCES Information & Authors Metrics & Citations View Options References Figures Tables Media Share Abstract Global warming has become a critical factor affecting surface ozone (O3) pollution. The effectiveness of emission reductions for O3 pollution mitigation largely relies on the sensitivity of O3 production to its precursors.
Radical-omics reveals the hydrogen-abstraction pathway of isoprene oxidation
Abstract Isoprene is the most abundant biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) and has far-reaching impacts on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation globally. Its atmospheric oxidation produces diverse isomeric radicals that drive subsequent chain propagation and mechanistic branching. However, high-throughput experimental characterization of these isomeric-resolved radicals remains unavailable, leaving critical gaps in the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Reactive aldehyde chemistry explains the missing source of hydroxyl radicals - Nature Communications
Abstract Hydroxyl radicals (OH) determine the tropospheric self-cleansing capacity, thus regulating air quality and climate. However, the state-of-the-art mechanisms still underestimate OH at low nitrogen oxide and high volatile organic compound regimes even considering the latest isoprene chemistry.

Ozone pollution mitigation strategy informed by long-term trends of atmospheric oxidation capacity - Nature Geoscience
|
Abstract Tropospheric ozone pollution is a critical air-quality concern in China. However, the most effective mitigation approach remains unclear, with prioritizing the reduction of volatile organic compounds or nitrogen oxides (NOX) currently still under debate. Here we analyse observational measurements of ozone in August, as well as its precursors, from urban Beijing between 2006 and 2020.

Increased night-time oxidation over China despite widespread decrease across the globe - Nature Geoscience
Abstract Nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) emitted from combustion and natural sources are reactive gases that regulate the composition of Earth’s atmosphere. Nocturnal oxidation driven by nitrate radicals is an important but poorly understood process in atmospheric chemistry, affecting the lifetimes of NOx and ozone and particulate pollution levels.

Field Determination of Nitrate Formation Pathway in Winter Beijing
Particulate nitrate (pNO3–) has often been found to be the major component of fine particles in urban air-sheds in China, the United States, and Europe during winter haze episodes in recent years. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the experimentally determined contribution of different chemical pathways to the formation of pNO3–.
No Evidence for a Significant Impact of Heterogeneous Chemistry on Radical Concentrations in the North China Plain in Summer 2014
The oxidation of nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide by hydroperoxy (HO2) and organic peroxy radicals (RO2) is responsible for the chemical net ozone production in the troposphere and for the regeneration of hydroxyl radicals, the most important oxidant in the atmosphere. In Summer 2014, a field campaign was conducted in the North China Plain, where increasingly severe ozone pollution has been experienced in the last years. Chemical conditions in the campaign were representative for this area.
Fast Photochemistry in Wintertime Haze: Consequences for Pollution Mitigation Strategies
In contrast to summer smog, the contribution of photochemistry to the formation of winter haze in northern mid-to-high latitude is generally assumed to be minor due to reduced solar UV and water vapor concentrations.
