Introduction Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) refers to a clinical syndrome in which women younger than 40 years develop ovarian dysfunction, which is mainly characterized by abnormal menstruation (amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea for at least 4 months), increased gonadotropin levels (an elevated follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level > 25 IU/L on two occasions > 4 weeks apart), and oestrogen-deficiency symptom (1).
