Shigella flexneri evades LPS ubiquitylation through IpaH1.4-mediated degradation of RNF213
Abstract The evolutionary arms race between pathogens and hosts has resulted in pathogens acquiring diverse adaptive countermeasures that antagonize host immunity. Ubiquitylation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on cytosol-invading bacteria by the E3 ligase RNF213 creates 'eat-me' signals for antibacterial autophagy but whether and how cytosol-adapted bacteria avoid LPS ubiquitylation remains poorly understood.
The Meaning Behind The Song: Quisiera Ser Alcohol by Caifanes
The Meaning Behind The Song: Quisiera Ser Alcohol by Caifanes Quisiera Ser Alcohol is a song by the Mexican rock band Caifanes. TECPR1 conjugates LC3 to damaged endomembranes upon detection of sphingomyelin exposure
TECPR1 mediates ATG16L1-independent conjugation of LC3 at Salmonella-containing vacuoles The identification of a novel sphingomyelin-activated TECPR1/ATG5/ATG12 E3 ligase prompted us to investigate how ATG5 is recruited to Salmonella-containing vacuoles. To this end, isogenic polyclonal MEFs deficient in ATG5, ATG16L1 or TECPR1 were generated by CRISPR-Cas9 (Fig EV4A).

Letter to the editor: An open letter to the Summit County health department
I’m writing to voice my total frustration in the recent decision by your department to implement a countywide indoor mask mandate. I just finished reading the article in the Summit Daily News where, to my dismay, your department admits there is not a single case of COVID-19 in the Summit medical center and that hospitals are not being overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases. What basis does this department have for implementing this type of mandate?
Ubiquitylation of lipopolysaccharide by RNF213 during bacterial infection
Abstract Ubiquitylation is a widespread post-translational protein modification in eukaryotes and marks bacteria that invade the cytosol as cargo for antibacterial autophagy1,2,3. The identity of the ubiquitylated substrate on bacteria is unknown.
Transbilayer Movement of Sphingomyelin Precedes Catastrophic Breakage of Enterobacteria-Containing Vacuoles
Highlights • Lysenin serves as a reporter of sphingomyelin exposure in the mammalian cytosol • Chemical-, toxin-, or pathogen-induced membrane damage exposes sphingomyelin • Sphingomyelin exposure precedes catastrophic breakage of bacteria-containing vacuoles • Cytosolic sphingomyelin is indicative of membrane stress and imminent pathogen entry Summary 1 Schaible U.E. The Cargo Receptor NDP52 Initiates Selective Autophagy by Recruiting the ULK Complex to Cytosol-Invading Bacteria
Highlights • NDP52 recruits upstream autophagy machinery to damaged Salmonella-containing vacuoles • NDP52 trimerizes with the ULK subunit FIP200 and the TBK1 adaptor SINTBAD • NDP52-dependent recruitment of FIP200-ULK and SINTBAD-TBK1 required for xenophagy • Recruitment of ULK and TBK1 complexes promotes phagophore formation in situ Summary Xenophagy, a selective autophagy pathway that protects the cytosol against bacterial invasion, relies on cargo receptors that juxtapose bacteria and...
