Alex Palou claimed another pole position for IndyCar’s new race in Washington as he bids to seal his fifth championship title. Kyle Kirkwood lined up alongside him for the 147-lap race. Here are the highlights.

George Russell said letting his team mate and championship rival overtake him was the correct decision which minimised the risk to their races. Andrea Kimi Antonelli ran ahead of Russell until he made an extra pit stop during a late Virtual Safety Car period. When Antonelli closed on Russell afterwards, Mercedes ordered the pair to swap positions. Russell complied, though it handed Antonelli a six-point swing in the championship fight between the pair of them.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli was not convinced his extra pit stop in the Dutch Grand Prix was the right decision as it risked compromising his race. The Mercedes driver made an extra pit stop 16 laps from the end of the race, taking advantage of a late Virtual Safety Car period. It dropped him from second place to third behind his team mate George Russell. Antonelli was able to repass his team mate for second place after Mercedes ordered Russell to let him through.
