Making Charts and Graphs in InDesign
is now part of CreativePro.com! This article appeared in Issue 26 of CreativePro Magazine. It’s hard to believe that Adobe hasn’t built a modern, full-featured, designer-friendly graphing solution that integrates seamlessly into an InDesign page layout workflow. Adobe’s solution is the nine anemic graph tools built into Illustrator—tools that contain only very basic features, haven’t been significantly improved since they made their debut in Illustrator during the early 1990s.

The Computational Power of Humanity™
Before Artificial Intelligence there was... Intelligence. You may have noticed that there is a lot of hype about Artificial Intelligence. As the ultimate form of slavery it has, and will, produce many benefits. Did you know there are two types of Artificial Intelligence? The one that most of us will be familiar with is where a program is written that can learn. These are large and complicated programs as the intelligence has to be built in.
Editorial Review Workflows
This article appeared in Issue 23 of CreativePro Magazine. Adobe has been trying to drum up interest in on-screen proofing for many years, going way back to early versions of Acrobat. And now the company has recently ramped things up with the addition of Share for Review in several Creative Cloud products. But despite Adobe’s relentless promotion, getting people to use these features (and use them consistently, correctly, and efficiently) can be difficult.
InReview: Table Tools for InDesign
is now part of CreativePro.com! This article appeared in Issue 20 of CreativePro Magazine. InDesign’s table creation and editing features first appeared 21 years ago in InDesign 2.0. While their scope, precision, and typographic control were groundbreaking at the time, Adobe hasn’t made significant improvements to InDesign’s table features in many years. That’s a shame. The resulting tables are often large, detailed, and complex.

If so, you need to know about something called a Sales Enablement Platform, a special kind of Content Management System (CMS) purpose-built for sales materials. . . . .
Take two tablets…
…and publish in the morning. An in-depth lookat the available tablet apps. When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad in 2010, he demonstrated the new Wired magazine app, which was created with InDesign and an early version of Adobe Digital Publishing Suite (DPS). Publishers large and small rushed to create digital content for the iPad, eagerly anticipating huge consumer demand for the chance to read graphically rich, interactive content on these shiny new devices.

How to Use Multi-Layered Illustrator Artwork in InDesign
Did you know that you can create multi-layered artwork in Adobe Illustrator, and then turn layers on and off in InDesign? Learn how in this quick tutorial. Step 1 - Create Artwork With Multiple Layers Create some artwork in Adobe Illustrator CS3 or CS4 that contains multiple layers. I've created a map that contains nine layers. Note that these are top-level layers. You cannot manipulate Illustrator sublayers in InDesign.
A Script to Find Spelled Out Numbers in InDesign
A friend called me with what I thought was a simple request: find a way to search in an InDesign document for numbers that are spelled out, like one thousand forty-seven and twelve hundred six. “No problem,” I said naively, and whipped up a simple GREP search expression that he could enter in InDesign’s GREP Find/Change dialog box, thinking that would be the end of it.

How to Type Special Characters Quickly - InDesignSecrets.com
Thanks for coming to InDesignSecrets.com, the world's #1 resource for all things InDesign! How to Type Special Characters Quickly Keith Gilbert June 21, 2019 Wouldn’t it be cool if you could just type “–” and have InDesign automatically that with em dash (—)? Or if you could type copyright and have it automatically expand to © copyright 2019 Ronco Corporation? Or type rbm and have it automatically expand to Ronco® Bass-O-Matic™? The possibilities are endless.
Avoiding the Insane Behavior of Undocked Panels - InDesignSecrets.com
Thanks for coming to InDesignSecrets.com, the world's #1 resource for all things InDesign! Avoiding the Insane Behavior of Undocked Panels Mike Rankin May 23, 2019 Pet peeves. We all have ’em. And if you spend enough time using any software program you’ll assemble a collection of peeves about the the way that program works. One InDesign peeve that I’ve had since, well, forever, is the way that collapsed undocked panels get screwy if you click on their icon or name.

Creating Number Circles - InDesignSecrets.com
Mike Rankin April 5, 2019 Recently, a friend came to me with an interesting InDesign dilemma. She needed to create numbered lists where the numbering was shown in colored circles with white numbers. The numbering had to remain “live” (not converted to real text), and using a number circle font was not an option. She had tried anchoring the circles in the paragraph, but since anchored items always appear in front of the text of the line where they’re anchored, this did not work.

Color FX Images Plugins and Scripts Free Script to Convert Color Images to Grayscale Keith Gilbert March 26, 2019 While creating a series of presentation templates for a client, I hammered together a couple of scripts that I thought I’d share. InDesign FX: Captain Marvel's Star - InDesignSecrets.com
So like a few bajillion other folks, I saw Captain Marvel recently. Fun movie, especially the bits with “Goose” the cat/flerkin. And since I tend to see the world through geek-colored glasses, I wondered about two somewhat ridiculous things as I sat in the theater. The first was which version of QuarkXPress was I using in 1995 (the year the movie was set). Turns out it was 3.2, which you can read all about at the indispensable Internet Archive.
InFocus: Autumn 2018 - InDesignSecrets.com

Speaking of hodgepodges, in this InFocus I’m throwing a little of everything your way, from fonts to utilities to books to scripts.

Designing Calendars - InDesignSecrets.com
If you’re looking to advertise your business, a calendar is a great promotional vehicle: a chance to put your products or portfolio in front of clients and potential clients and have it update every month for an entire year. How many other marketing pieces have such a long life span? To make the calendar beautiful, as well as functional, we need a fresh approach, and that’s a challenge when you’re working on a design problem that has been solved every year since the dawn of (recorded) time.

Rules for Working With Tiny Type - InDesignSecrets.com
Don’t worry; I promise this isn’t going to be a rant about the eyesight of the aging population and their impatience with type just getting smaller and smaller all the time. The fact is, there are many instances of design that call for the use of very small, if not tiny, type, and it’s not only on the geriatric prescription notifications. In print, these can include captions, credits, newspapers, dictionaries, manuals and directories, and instructions, as well as miniature books.
Illustrator and InDesign - InDesignSecrets.com
If you want to understand InDesign, you have to get to know its faithful partner, Illustrator—after all, Illustrator was Adobe’s first commercial product, its first tool, invented in the 1980s to provide a human face for an ugly programming language called PostScript. More importantly, if you want to be efficient with InDesign, you should understand how to combine the unique superpowers of these two programs, and how together they make an unbeatable design duo.
Collaborating Through Cloud Services - InDesignSecrets.com
Collaborating Through Cloud Services Conrad Chavez May 23, 2018 This article appeared in Issue 109 of InDesign Magazine. Options for InDesign workgroups Publishing is usually a collaborative effort, but many software tools are still built as if each computer is an island.
Drag and Drop Graphics into CC Libraries - InDesignSecrets.com
Keith Gilbert May 11, 2018 Due to some recent changes to CC Libraries you can now drag and drop images from the Macintosh Finder or Window File Explorer into a Library. This is a big deal. It enables you to quickly load AI, PNG, BMP, PSD, SVG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, TIF, TIFF, and PDF files directly into a library without having to first place them on a page in InDesign or open them in Photoshop or Illustrator.
How to Get Tooltips Working Again - InDesignSecrets.com
I find InDesign’s tooltips (the little box of text that appears when you hover over certain interface elements) extremely useful. For example, to quickly check the destination of a hyperlink, you can just hover over the hyperlink and the destination will be displayed. Or, to display the path to a linked image, hover over the image in the Links panel.
Using Google Fonts With InDesign - InDesignSecrets.com
Using Google Fonts With InDesign This article appeared in Issue 109 of InDesign Magazine. How to Find, Install, and Use Google Fonts in InDesign If you’re a Creative Cloud member, you have access to Typekit, which at last count featured over 1500 type families for desktop use. But if, like me, you believe that you can never have enough fonts, Google Fonts is another large type library you can access… and it’s free! The primary purpose of Google Fonts is to serve up fonts to websites.

Put Lines to Left and Right of a Heading - InDesignSecrets.com
Ann wrote: I’ve hunted and hunted for a way to make … a centered heading with a line on either side. There are two ways to create this effect: the traditional, easy way (which works in limited situations); and a slightly more difficult method (which works in almost all situations).

Mind your InDesign Metadata: It Might Show Up in a Web Browser! - InDesignSecrets.com
Last month, when I was testing an email blast for my wife’s gallery (the Galerie St. Etienne in New York City), I had a strange experience… something you probably want to be aware of if you create PDF files from InDesign. I had made a PDF, uploaded it to our server, and then linked to it from within the email blast.
Easier Text Formatting with the Character and Paragraph Panels - InDesignSecrets.com
Because InDesign’s Control panel (the bar across the top of the screen) displays most of the necessary type attributes when text is selected, most people don’t keep the Character panel (Window > Type and Tables > Character) or Paragraph panel (Window > Type and Tables > Paragraph) open on their screen. However, there are two situations where these panels are timesavers.
New Eyedropper Tool Options in InDesign CC 2018 - InDesignSecrets.com
When you double-click on the Eyedropper tool (keyboard shortcut: I) in InDesign CC 2018, you’ll see new Object Size and Position options under the heading Transform Options. These options were added to the Eyedropper tool in CC 2018 because the ability to “memorize” an object’s size and position was added to object styles in this version of InDesign. These two options are pretty self-explanatory.
A History of InDesign Splash Screens - InDesignSecrets.com
David Blatner February 15, 2018 In our recent redesign of InDesign Magazine, we did something radical: we dropped the butterfly from the logo. But I bet many (perhaps most!) InDesign users today don’t even know why we had a butterfly in there at all… or why until recently our product reviews rated with a “numbers of butterflies” rather than “number of stars.” The reason is that the symbol of InDesign was a butterfly, from version 1.0 in 1999 until the release of version CS3 in 2007.
InReview: in5 - InDesignSecrets.com
in5, an add-on from Ajar Productions, extends the power of InDesign to export digital documents from InDesign layouts. It does this by exporting InDesign pages to HTML5 output. In the four and a half years since in5 was first introduced (see Issue #54 for the original review), there have been big changes to the product, the digital publishing landscape, and InDesign itself—so it’s time for another look at this tool and how it might fit into your publishing workflow.
Creating Relative Hyperlinks in InDesign - InDesignSecrets.com
With InDesign you can create hyperlinks to PDF files that reside on your file server or local hard drive. The trouble is, when you create a PDF of the InDesign file, those hyperlinks point to the absolute, fixed path to those files on your server or local hard drive, which makes it next to impossible to share the PDF with anyone else in a meaningful way. David wrote about this problem way back in 2010.
Beta IDML-to-QuarkXPress Workflow - InDesignSecrets.com
Yes, we’ve seen all the snarky comments before, such as “you mean Quark still exists?!” After all, it’s true that InDesign has largely replaced QX in most designer’s toolkits over the past 18 years. But yes, Quark and QuarkXPress not only still exist, but it’s still being actively developed and improved in some pretty cool ways. Our own Editor in Chief, Mike Rankin did the most recent QuarkXPress Essential Training courses for Lynda.com/LinkedIn Learning.
InStep: Creating Video Controls - InDesignSecrets.com
Too often, designers get pigeonholed into thinking about InDesign as a print-only application. But if the most recent releases of InDesign have taught us anything, it’s that InDesign is capable of far more than that. With its ability to output to digital publishing formats such as interactive PDF, EPUB, and DPS, we have more publishing options than ever before. And with those options come opportunities for including all sorts of fun modern gadgets that Mr. Gutenberg himself never dreamed of! . . . .

InFocus: Resources for Book Design and Production - InDesignSecrets.com

What’s New in InDesign CC 2018 from InDesignSecrets.com
A bevy of feature improvements bring a sigh of relief to long-time InDesign users Adobe has just released a major new version of InDesign—InDesign CC 2018. Following the precedent of CC 2017, Adobe released it in connection with its big Creative Cloud event, Adobe MAX 2017, held this year in Las Vegas. Unlike InDesign CC 2017, which emphasized a new user interface more than new features, this release has major new features, some of which users have wanted for a long time.
