A woman in her 70s has escaped injury after a tree crashed through her roof at Mudgeeraba about 4.35am on Friday, as the damaging effects of Tropical Cyclone Alfred become more real. About 36,000 people across South East Queensland have lost power, with the Gold Coast, where 24,000 outages are being reported, the hardest hit.

Thousands of Gold Coast homes lost power on Thursday night as Cyclone Alfred’s fury began to bear down on the Gold Coast. Shortly before 8pm 5614 properties in Coolangatta, Tugun and Bilinga saw their electricity cut. Almost 2000 homes in Currumbin Waters also lost power, and another 131 in Currumbin Valley. More than 100 properties were also without power in Bonogin due to downed powerlines.

Most major supermarkets, hardware stores and bottle shops will be trading as per usual in the lead up to Cyclone Alfred, as Queenslanders rush to stock up on last-minute supplies. Coles, Woolworths and Bunnings have all confirmed they will remain operating in the lead up to the extreme weather event, choosing to play opening hours by ear rather than closing. On the Gold Coast, two Woolworths stores at Harbour Town and Robina have confirmed they will close tomorrow.
