Know the Horsepower of Your Money
I fell in love with the power of dividends in 2011 while working on an income investing newsletter. I very quickly understood the math that makes dividends one of the most powerful tools for investors. Dividends give you an extra stream of income without taking on a second job. Finding the best stocks requires some upfront effort, of course. But once you own the shares, that money keeps coming in like clockwork. That is only half of the story. They are also a powerful tool to build wealth.
Don’t Fall for these 3 Dividend Traps
It’s earnings season, and I clicked through lots of earnings calls, press releases, and media reports last week. I kept seeing articles with investing tips that are actually traps to avoid. I had to click on them to hear what others think the biggest investing “sins” are. I am genuinely curious about different investing principles even if I don’t agree. It was a good reminder that we all participate in the same market but in different ways.
Lock in Your Entry Price Before it’s Too Late
The yield on the S&P 500 is about 1.25%. That is down from 1.36% last month, and below its 1.81% long-term average. It’s not hard to find “high yield” with that as your baseline. It’s more common for dividend investors to use CD rates as a benchmark. These insured bank accounts guarantee that investor sentiment can’t touch your capital, and a Board of Directors can’t alter your yield. If you can lock in 4% insured by the FDIC, why look for short-term holdings with comparable yields?
Signs that Scream “Time to Sell”
We had over 200 people join last week’s live event. What a great turnout! If you missed it, we’ve posted a recorded version along with a transcript and the PowerPoint slides in the Dividend Digest online community. I tried to share way too much information for a one-hour call, and I ran a little short on time. As promised, I will work through the submitted questions and the sections I couldn’t cover over the next few weeks in this letter. Let’s start with knowing when to sell.
These signals will tell you when it’s time to sell your dividend stocks.

Stay Cautious as Markets Turn Greedy
The actual quote is from Warren Buffett’s 1986 letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders: What we do know, however, is that occasional outbreaks of those two super-contagious diseases, fear and greed, will forever occur in the investment community. … Therefore, we never try to anticipate the arrival or departure of either disease.
(07/10/25) Keep Buffett’s Advice in Mind as Q2 Earnings Season Nears
Warren Buffett’s 1986 letter to Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK.A) shareholders read: “We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.” We are in a period of market greed right now, even if you haven’t noticed it. So, this week, make sure to take a good look at your portfolio, observes Kelly Green, editor of Dividend Digest. Last week, the CNN Fear & Greed Index moved into Extreme Greed territory.
Here’s how to use today’s market greed to grab shares of your favorite dividend stocks at a great price.

Use this simple math to know if a dividend is sustainable
I love getting questions from you all. It makes me look at companies I might not dig into otherwise. It also reminds me to circle back on topics we haven’t hit in a while. Today, we revisit a question from Doc about how to tell if a dividend is safe or sustainable. Before we get into that, don’t forget about our first Dividend Digest live call next Thursday at 2pm EDT. I will take you through my full strategy for both building wealth and generating income.
Do More of What You Love
Isn’t that the whole goal of life? To set yourself up to enjoy and love as much of life as possible? Money doesn’t buy happiness. But financial security means you can devote your time and energy to things you actually want to be doing. I don’t know about you, but if I’m worried about money, I’m not much fun to be around. It will literally consume me. This is why I don’t have a lot of my money in speculative investments. Yes, I’ll admit that dividends don’t make up 100% of my personal portfolio.

Going VIP is the Secret to Dividend Success in 2025
Free Research Global Macro Update Thoughts from the Frontline Who We Are Premium Research SIC Kelly Green | June 18, 2025 | Comments My Marriott status reset this year. Although I had been traveling a lot, I hadn’t been the one booking the hotels. I didn’t like the “peasant” status—no late checkouts, no surprise suite upgrades. It was especially rough after I traveled with friends who had higher status than I did. I have corrected the situation with my 2025 travel.
3 funds that open the door to hard-to-access income investments
There are tens of thousands of stocks, ETFs, and mutual funds available in the US. Whatever your investing goals might be, there are plenty of options to meet them. Income generation is no exception. I believe we should get paid on our investments. And we should get paid more when we take on more risk. For Bedrock Income holdings, my minimum yield is 3.5%. These are typically boring, wealth-building businesses we can set-and-forget for decades to come.
People continue to spend on experiences.
Free Research Global Macro Update Thoughts from the Frontline Who We Are Premium Research SIC Kelly Green | May 28, 2025 | Comments Epic Universe opened last Thursday at Universal Studios in Orlando. It took over six years to build and cost over $7 billion. It is the first major theme park to open in the US since 2001. It adds five new immersive worlds and three hotels to help solidify Universal as a vacation destination. And this is just the beginning of expansions on the horizon.
Successful dividend investing starts with knowing your goals
That is good advice for just about everything you do in life. Many self-help gurus have made it the basis of their life improvement system. But I’m here to relate it to your investing portfolio. A portfolio looking to score huge gains from emerging tech will look a lot different from a dividend portfolio. And both will look different from a crypto strategy. This conversation got started in a mailbag question I got last week. Jaidev wrote in and asked “What’s your take on UnitedHealth stock?
SJM: A Consumer Staples Standout with an Attractive Yield
In 2011, I worked on a newsletter that used a seven-point system to find the best dividend stocks. My favorite was always “a business that your mother would love or at least understand.” J.M. Smucker Co. (SJM) is one name I like, writes Kelly Green, editor of Dividend Digest. Speculators are chasing share price movements on a screen. They make a trade when they think that number is going to move one way or the other. Investors are buying a business because they see long-term value.

It was great to catch up and reminisce about our old letters.
2025 Is Gonna Get Uncomfortable
I hate to be the one to break it to you, but the economy and the markets are not working efficiently. It’s been that way for at least all of my adult life (2008), and maybe a handful of years before that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not endorsing any of the political actions being taken right now. Policy consequences unfold over time and most politicians are not thinking past stage one. What might seem like tonic to the market today can turn toxic as it trickles through the system.

Digital advertising adds another engine of growth to the industry.
I was in Hobart, Indiana, a few weeks ago. Punk band Screeching Weasel was playing a run of shows after a 6-year hiatus. I missed grabbing tickets to their Chicago shows before they sold out. But I didn’t mind. I had never been to Indiana, and an old friend of mine now lives in Valparaiso where I had booked a hotel room. I spent a few days exploring the entire bottom side of Lake Michigan. And I used an extra day before my flight back to Memphis to see parts of Route 66 in Illinois.
Weak oil prices make today the right time to lock in great yields from energy stocks
I’m not completely adverse to speculation. I like sitting around with friends and talking about what might happen in the markets. And occasionally I’ll slip a dollar or two into a slot machine at the local casino. But at the end of the day, I want to know there is stability in my portfolio. Our dividend stocks are not entirely immune to the fluctuations of the market—no stock is. Their share prices are still exposed to the day-to-day whims of the investing masses.
Are Dividend Cuts on the Horizon in 2025?
If I had a dollar for every time I heard or read the word recession in the last week, well, I’d have enough not to be financially worried about one. Add a dollar for every mention of tariffs and I’d be comfortably flushed with cash. These will definitely be the buzzwords through Q2, and I’m betting through the end of the year. Whether we experience an “actual” recession or not, I’m certain this year will bring a level of discomfort to both consumers and investors.

Market sell-offs are an opportunity to own great dividend companies at a great price
I have been enjoying the chance to add to my portfolio over the past few weeks. I ramped up my purchases last week. As a long-term dividend investor, I plan to hold my positions for many years to come. I’m focused on locking in higher yields as the market sell-off gives me attractive entry prices. Knowing our dividend yield means knowing the horsepower of our investible dollars. Yield is inversely related to entry price.
Fear & Greed Index Message is Crystal Clear: Start Buying!
The absolute best time to start investing would be the day you turned 18 and could legally open a brokerage account. The second-best time to start investing is right now. According to the Fear & Greed Index, 2025 is the time for us to be greedy, suggests Kelly Green, editor of Dividend Digest.

Americans have too much stuff, and here’s how to get paid from the solution
Last Tuesday, my friend and I spent 14 hours loading everything I own into the smallest shipping container I’ve ever seen. That really is everything I own, plus my motorcycle and Miata. Although the whole experience was an excellent example of teamwork, I think I’m going to splurge on full-service movers next time. The last time that I moved out of state was in 2015 when I made my way from Maryland to Florida. That time, I loaded everything into a trailer.
KMB: A Consumer Goods Giant with an Attractive Yield
Given the recent market selloff, I inevitably get asked what stocks I think are the best deal right now. My first response is always: Any long-term holding you plan to continue holding where the current price is lower than your cost basis. One of my favorite plays right now is Kimberly-Clark Corp. (KMB), writes Kelly Green, editor of Dividend Digest. These are stocks that are truly on sale for you.
How to use market downturns to maximize long-term gains
Free Research Global Macro Update Thoughts from the Frontline Who We Are Premium Research SIC Kelly Green | March 19, 2025 | Comments A friend of mine keeps posting every day about how much money she has lost in the stock market. I finally had to comment on her post: “Stop checking your account. And if you haven’t sold, you haven’t really lost anything yet.” We all know that’s an oversimplification.
Are You Ready for the Rotation?
It was inevitable. Certain pieces of the market roared to insane valuations last year. Investors poured money into the markets and speculated stocks would keep rising forever. But, sentiment has shifted. Last week was the worst week for the market in six months. Politics are now front and center as we wait to see the true impact of tariffs. Nvidia (NVDA) lost nearly 10% last week, and it saw $1 trillion in market cap wiped out since its January high.

Some Dividend Aristocrats are paying generous yields. Are they worth a look?
Free Research Global Macro Update Thoughts from the Frontline Who We Are Premium Research SIC Kelly Green | February 26, 2025 | Comments I’m not completely bearish right now, since I’m always bullish on our dividend strategy. But I’m definitely nervous about some signals I’m seeing in the market. I don’t think we’re in for a year of rational market movements. In a market climate like that, it makes sense to consider stocks such as the Dividend Aristocrats.
Solving the Income Investor Dilemma
My friends like to make fun of me by taunting that I don’t like to commit to things. I’m constantly trying new hobbies. I don’t like to make plans too far in advance because something more exciting might pop up. I don’t even like to renew my car tags for more than one year. I have the opposite problem with my investments. When it comes to those, I’m a bit of a hoarder. My two-pronged strategy is based on long-term holding.

He Loves Me? He Loves Me Not?
It’s mid-February and earnings season is in full swing. All I really want to know is if Mr. Market is going to be my Valentine… or not. Earnings data hits, political comments are made, and investors react. The CNN Fear & Greed Index is at dead neutral. Maybe I should just sit on the balcony and pluck petals off a daisy for a read on how 2025 will treat us. Heck, I might even break out my old Magic 8 Ball stored in the garage.

How to earn income from stocks that don’t pay dividends
I have an unpopular opinion. Ok, I probably have more than one unpopular opinion. That’s ok, too, as these are the things that make me unique. One of my contrary opinions, in particular, is about ETFs (exchange-traded funds). Since 1993, ETFs have enabled investors to gain exposure to different asset classes without having to buy individual stocks or bonds. They are structured similarly to mutual funds but can be bought and sold during the trading day just like a stock.
The Trends Set to Make Us Money in 2025
Originally published January 29, 2025 The first month of 2025 will soon be behind us. We’ve seen new inflation data and earnings season start to ramp up. Today, we’ll hear from the FOMC as it concludes its January meeting. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq have gone nowhere this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has shown some slight optimism with a 5% year-to-date gain. That’s how I would describe what I’ve seen so far in 2025—hints of optimism. The general mood, however, is a bit more fearful.

Caution on Wendy’s dividend, and a pot stock with potential
If I screen for stocks on a US exchange that pay a dividend I get 2,941 results. If I filter for a minimum dividend yield of 3.5%, I still get 1,204 potential investments. Get ahead of holiday shopping trends to score the best deals on dividend stocks.
I was lucky enough to be invited to Manhattan last week to hang out with some friends. In addition to exploring the city by leaning off a 1,200-foot-high platform in Hudson Yards, and spending over 6 hours at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I got to see the city decked out in holiday spirit. Although I wasn’t “brave” enough (or really crazy enough) to fight the crowds for the Rockefeller and Wall Street tree lightings, I still saw both trees lit up in all their glory.

November was an interesting month for pharmaceutical companies in general. President-elect Trump officially announced that Robert F. He’s also criticized the nation’s food and nutrition standards and vaccine policies. The nomination was enough to send pharmaceutical company shares sliding last month.

Opportunity… or a Bigger Red Flag?
I’ve been looking for the best dividends in the market for over 13 years. Time after time, I keep coming back to this question. When we buy shares of a stock, it represents an ownership share of the underlying company. We can use different metrics to determine how much our shares should be worth, but at the end of the day, the market sets that value. And a big part of that calculation is investor sentiment.
