It’s Like an E-Bike But for Skiing. I Tested the World’s First E-Skimo.
The concept of an e-ski isn’t new. U.S. patents date back to 1950 with the most recent filing in 1972. Fast forward to late last year: while scrolling Instagram, I saw a post declaring “Swiss company unveils first electrically assisted touring ski.” E-Skimo, as it’s called, is being dubbed the e-bike of winter, and the post claimed the new technology, rightly or wrongly, is revolutionizing ski mountaineering by making it more accessible.

2 hours ago Martha Stewart, Jacob Tierney, and more tastemakers share their most memorable kisses—from under the Moroccan stars to a Paris Cemetery. Atop the Empire State Building. On an abandoned train platform in Mumbai as your life flashes before your eyes. In front of all your friends as the clock strikes …

I Went Off-grid in Argentina’s Rain Forest-Here’s What I Learned From the Guaraní and Their Sacred Mate Original
Hiking the nature reserve at Yacutinga Lodge, in Argentina. Credit: Yacutinga Lodge As I walked up to the ceremonial hut, flames licked the fat belly of a cauldron, sending curls of smoke into the humid air of the Yacutinga nature reserve, in Argentina’s northeastern corner. A medicine man crushed dried yerba mate leaves in a wooden mortar, then brushed them into simmering water, before mixing in embers from the fire and a heap of granulated sugar.
In Switzerland, Barryland Celebrates the Saint Bernard
At 8,114 feet above sea level, near the Italian border, I’m being led through the Swiss Canton of Valais by its most distinguished ambassadors. As Roanne and Lio lope ahead with their trainer, Chiara, I keep a firm hold on Athena, who strides beside me, her broad neck encircled by a thick leather collar marked with a white cross on a red backdrop—Switzerland’s national emblem.
Discover the Magic of Rooibos in South Africa’s Rugged Mountains Original
I popped a pod into the Nespresso machine in my hotel room, and as tea filled the mug, I inhaled the woody, caramel aroma of rooibos. The broomlike shrub — its name is Afrikaans for “red bush” — is native to the Cederberg Mountains of South Africa’s Western Cape, where temperatures can rise above 100 degrees in summer and drop to near freezing in winter. The region is, in fact, the only place in the world where rooibos grows.
The birthplace of Canada’s mountain culture used to be an endangered heritage site. Now you can visit it once more
Just before turning up Ottoson Road, on my way to Edelweiss Village + Resort, I recall a childhood memory. Decades ago, while driving near this part of Golden, B.C., my dad suddenly pointed out six whimsical houses poking out of the woods on the side of a hill: “Those are the Swiss guide houses,” he declared. The moment stayed with me. Perhaps it was the admiration in his voice or the Dr. Seuss-like character of the houses that caught my attention.

Supporting Refugees’ Mental Health: ‘Often an Afterthought’

Matrix-Degrading Enzyme Expression and Aortic Fibrosis During Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Mechanical Support:
Abstract Background The effects of nonphysiological flow generated by continuous-flow (CF) left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) on the aorta remain poorly understood. Objectives The authors sought to quantify indexes of fibrosis and determine the molecular signature of post–CF-LVAD vascular remodeling. Methods Paired aortic tissue was collected at CF-LVAD implant and subsequently at transplant from 22 patients.
Relation between right ventricular wall stress, fibrosis and function in right ventricular pressure loading
Research ArticleMuscle Mechanics and Ventricular Function Jonathan Gold, Yohei Akazawa, Mei Sun, Kendall S. Hunter, and Mark K. Friedberg Abstract Right ventricular (RV) pressure-loading induces RV fibrosis and dysfunction. We previously found increased RV, septal hinge-point and left ventricle (LV) fibrosis in experimental RV pressure-loading. The relation of RV wall-stress to biventricular fibrosis and dysfunction is incompletely defined.
