One of my happiest moments this year was a day out surfing in my seaside hometown. I hadn’t been on a board in at least a decade and (despite growing up around surf culture and being married to an avid wave rider) was never very good at it to begin with. And yet there I was in an enormous wave pool by the beach, paddling out and popping up (or to be honest, more like clambering) onto my wobbling ankles on a 9-foot board.
