Major excursions in sulfur isotopes linked to permafrost change in Eurasia during the last 50,000 years - Nature Geoscience

Abstract We identify a major sulfur isotope excursion in Eurasian faunal bone collagen from the last 50,000 years, here termed the Late Pleniglacial Sulfur Excursion. Our analysis suggests this is linked to changing permafrost conditions, presenting the utility of faunal collagen δ34S as a proxy for permafrost dynamics, a critical component of the global carbon cycle. Our findings complicate the use of archaeological faunal sulfur isotopes for mobility and palaeodietary studies.

Sulfur isotopic variation in the terrestrial food web Terrestrial animals display a remarkably wide range (17.8‰) in their δ34S values, from –6.3‰ to 11.5‰ (average 4.8 ± 3.8‰) (Figs 5 and S3). There is also a great deal of overlap between different species. Terrestrial animals as a group have statistically significantly different δ34S values compared to both marine and freshwater species (p<0.0001).
