In the midst of a downpour, Air Academy sophomore Landry Frost stepped up to the first tee with a smile on her face. Her positive attitude paid dividends as she piped her drive down the par-5 first fairway, stuck her approach to about 10 feet and calmly and her eagle putt. Frost battled through the elements just like everyone else at The Bridges and shot a 3-over-par 74 to take a one-shot lead after the first day of the Class 4A girls golf state tournament.

Greatness achieved as the 2026 track and field season comes to an end

In the distance, spectators roared to life. The cheers echoed across the infield and fell upon my ears. It was a theme on the third day of the 2026 Colorado state track and field championships. There was an inconsistent crescendo that erupted every few minutes. Whether it was the east stands by the triple jump, the south side by the pole vault, or the west stands on the final straight, which were packed to the brim, something was going on in every direction.

State records fall on Day 1 of the CHSAA state track and field meet

From Quinn Sullivan’s opening leg, it was clear. Niwot intended to not only break the Colorado 4×800 state record of 7 minutes, 43.92 seconds— the Cougars wanted to obliterate it. “The main goal was to win that leg,” Sullivan shared. “You’ve got Jay McDonald from Summit in there, so you had to go fast to win that leg. That was the goal.” Sullivan opened with a 1:51.37 first leg, while Ryder Keeton countered with a 1:52.72, and it was the Niwot show from there.
