Like millions of Americans this election season, I’m unenthused about either major-party presidential nominee. I know my preference — I’ll take the grumpy old man over the aspiring autocrat — but I sure don’t like the choices. Here’s another way that I’m like millions of Americans: No matter who wins, my vote in November won’t matter one iota in the selection of the next president. In a real way, it won’t even count. Depending where you live and who you vote for, your vote may not count, either.

May you live in interesting times, goes the ironic old curse. We do. America may be more politically divided today than it's been since the late 1960s. When the ever-tactful Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene recently called for a "national divorce," so that conservative Americans wouldn't have to put up with liberals in their midst (and, by implication, vice-versa), several pundits suggested it has already happened.
