There is substantial interest in creating sensors for detecting the carbohydrate components of glycopeptides, glycoproteins, and glycopolymers─collectively known as glycans─which appear throughout nature, (1) but challenges related to the sensitivity and selectivity of the detection schemes have hindered their adoption.

Abstract Viral pandemics continue to threaten global health and economic stability. Despite medical advances, the absence of broad-spectrum antivirals (BSAs) prevents rapid responses to emerging viral threats. This is largely due to the lack of universal drug targets across diverse viral families and high variability among viral proteins.

Chiral cation-radical salts hold significant promise as charge-transfer materials, chirooptical switches, and electron-transfer catalysts for enantioselective synthesis. Herein we demonstrate that the readily-available chiral 9,10-diphenyleanthracene derivative (i.e. SANT) forms a robust cation radical, whose structure was elucidated by X-ray crystallography and DFT calculations.
