Dive in. Choose your colleagues and the editors you work for carefully. Understand their political stance, especially if they deny having one

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

To make a 16mm feature documentary (Bitter Cane) under the Duvalier dictatorship in the early 1980s. It turned out to be the best pitch.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That Haiti is a basket case. On the contrary, Haiti and its people are always in the vanguard of human history.
