For years, women’s-specific skis were the ski industry’s attempt to prove it understood female skiers—sometimes thoughtfully engineered, sometimes just smaller and suspiciously pastel. Now, many brands are backing away from the category altogether. With a few notable exceptions, companies are pivoting toward “unisex” skis, arguing that designing around ability, size, and skiing style—not gender—is the more inclusive path forward.

My friend Kenny is a pretty chill dude, one of those guys for whom the term “happy go lucky” was coined. If he were a dog, he’d be a Bernese Mountain Dog—happy, smart, and content to chill in the sun and chew a bone. Until, that is, it snows more than 8 inches, at which point he grows fangs and transforms into a foaming, snarling German shepherd. If you stand near the liftline and watch long enough, you’ll notice a pattern between ski brands and certain demographics. Mature skiers tend to go with European-made directional skis, like Blizzard, Rossignol, or Völkl. Younger freeriders—the goggle-straps-under-helmets set—opt for more athlete- and graphic-centric models like Line, K2, and of course, Atomic’s Bentchetler. Now, however, one traditional Euro brand has a new ski line that might upend the status quo.
