Abstract Topological defects give rise to non-trivial excitations—such as solitons, vortices and skyrmions—characterized by integer-valued topological charges. However, their classification becomes difficult when singularities are present in the order parameter field, complicating the computation of these charges.

Abstract Scale invariance and self-similarity in physics provide a unified framework for classifying phases of matter and dynamical properties near equilibrium in both classical and quantum systems. This paradigm has been further extended to isolated many-body quantum systems driven far from equilibrium, for which the physical observables exhibit dynamical scaling with universal scaling exponents.

Popular Summary Topological order in quantum many-body systems has drawn significant attention due to its potential applications in scalable fault-tolerant quantum computations. However, its practical use is still limited to small systems because of vulnerabilities to local errors, such as atom loss in atomic analog quantum simulators that use either an optical lattice or a tweezer atom array.
